Alias address formats: random, custom, and domain-based
When you create an alias in Cleanbox, you choose from three address formats. Each one suits a different situation, and you can mix and match them freely.
Random aliases
Cleanbox generates a random address for you — something like x7k9m2@cleanbox.me. You don’t pick the name; Cleanbox does.
- Best for: throwaway signups, one-time uses, or any situation where you don’t care what the address looks like
- Advantage: fast, no thought required, and impossible for anyone to guess
To create one, click Generate when adding a new alias. Cleanbox picks a random name and you’re done in seconds.
Custom aliases
You choose the name yourself — for example, shopping@cleanbox.me or john-newsletter@cleanbox.me. The address lives on the cleanbox.me domain, but you control the part before the @.
- Best for: addresses you want to remember or that need to look clean when you share them
- Advantage: easy to remember which alias is for what
When creating an alias, simply type your preferred name instead of clicking Generate.
Tip: use descriptive names like “amazon-shopping” or “linkedin-jobs” so you know at a glance what each alias is for.
Domain-based aliases
Use your own verified custom domain to create aliases like shop@yourdomain.com. This option is available on the Premium plan and above.
- Best for: professional use, business email, or when you want aliases that match your brand
- Advantage: looks professional, uses your own domain, and gives you full control
- Requires: a verified custom domain added in the Domains section of your dashboard
First add and verify your domain in Domains, then create aliases on it. Once verified, your domain appears as an option when you create a new alias.
Mixing all three formats
You can use all three formats at the same time. There’s no limit on combining them, and each alias works completely independently with its own spam threshold, filters, and Shield settings.

- Domain aliases for business contacts and professional communication
Choosing the right format
- Need it fast and don’t care about the name? → Random
- Want to remember it or share it with someone? → Custom
- Need it to look professional or match your brand? → Domain-based
No matter which format you pick, every alias gets the same Cleanbox protection — spam filtering, Shield rules, and full control over what reaches your inbox.
