Managing mailbox settings and folders
After connecting a mailbox, you can customize its settings to control how Cleanbox delivers messages. This includes choosing which IMAP folder to deliver to, adjusting connection settings, and managing the mailbox lifecycle.
Mailbox settings
To access your mailbox settings, navigate to Mailboxes in the sidebar and click on the mailbox you want to configure. The settings page shows:
- Email address — The connected email account
- IMAP host — The server address (e.g.,
imap.gmail.com) - IMAP port — Usually 993 for SSL connections
- Destination folder — Which folder emails are delivered to
- Status — Whether the mailbox is currently active or disabled
Changing the destination folder
By default, Cleanbox delivers messages to your inbox (INBOX). You can change this to any folder in your mailbox — for example, a dedicated "Cleanbox" folder to keep forwarded emails separate.
- Open the mailbox settings
- Click on the destination folder dropdown
- Select an existing folder from the list
- Save your changes
Creating custom folders
You can create new IMAP folders directly from Cleanbox without opening your email client:
- Open the mailbox settings
- Click "Create folder"
- Enter the folder name
- The folder is created in your mailbox and becomes available as a destination
Disabling a mailbox
If you want to temporarily stop delivering emails to a mailbox without removing it entirely:
- Open the mailbox settings
- Toggle the status switch to disabled
When a mailbox is disabled:
- No new messages are delivered to it
- Aliases pointing to this mailbox will have their messages queued or held
- The mailbox configuration is preserved
- You can re-enable it at any time
Deleting a mailbox
To permanently remove a mailbox:
- Open the mailbox settings
- Click "Delete mailbox"
- Confirm the deletion
Important: Deleting a mailbox does not delete the emails already in your inbox. It only removes the connection from Cleanbox. Make sure no aliases are still pointing to this mailbox before deleting — otherwise those aliases won't have a delivery destination.
Updating IMAP credentials
If your email provider requires a new password (e.g., you rotated your app-specific password), you can update it without deleting and re-adding the mailbox:
- Open the mailbox settings
- Update the password field
- Cleanbox will test the connection with the new credentials
- Save
Mailbox types
Cleanbox supports two mailbox types:
- IMAP mailbox — A standard email account where messages are delivered via IMAP. This is the most common type and works with all supported providers.
- Virtual mailbox — Used for special configurations where email delivery is handled differently. Virtual mailboxes are typically used in advanced setups with custom domains and relay.
For most users, an IMAP mailbox is the right choice.
