Creating folders on your mailbox from Cleanbox
When you set up a filter with a "deliver to folder" action, you may need a folder that does not exist yet on your mailbox. Cleanbox lets you create IMAP folders without leaving the dashboard.
Where you can create folders
The "Create folder" option appears in two places:
- Filter setup — When choosing a delivery folder for an Allow action, click the "Create folder" option in the folder dropdown
- Mailbox settings — In the mailbox edit modal, you can manage and create folders
How it works
- Click Create folder in the folder selector
- Enter the folder name (e.g., "Newsletters", "Receipts", "Clients")
- The folder is created on your IMAP mailbox immediately
- It appears in the folder dropdown and is available for filter rules
The folder is created on your actual email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) via IMAP. It will appear in your email client as well.
Folder naming
- Use simple, descriptive names
- Most IMAP servers support nested folders using a separator (usually
/or.). For example,Clients/ProjectAcreates a subfolder. - Avoid special characters that your email provider may not support
Common folder setups
| Folder | Filter rule |
|---|---|
Newsletters | Property is "Newsletter" → Allow, deliver to Newsletters |
Receipts | Category is "Shopping" → Allow, deliver to Receipts |
Alerts | Subject contains "alert" or "notification" → Allow, deliver to Alerts, mark as read |
